Pride, Presence and the Power of Inclusive Leadership

Every June, Pride Month offers a moment to celebrate visibility, community and courage — but also to reflect on the environments we create every other month of the year.

From our lived experience as part of the LGBTQIA+ community,  we’ve come to realise that true inclusion isn’t just about policies or rainbow logos. It’s about presence. Feeling seen, safe and valued enough to bring your whole self to work.

For many LGBTQIA+ people, work can still feel like a performance. Editing your story. Watching your words. Measuring the room before mentioning your partner’s name. These micro-decisions add up — quietly draining energy and confidence.

That’s where leadership makes all the difference.

Inclusive leaders notice what others might overlook.

Inclusive leaders foster psychological safety — the kind Amy Edmondson defines as the freedom to speak up and show up without fear. They ask, listen, and honour difference without making it feel like a spectacle. Their behaviour tells me: you belong here, as you are.

Academic research backs this up. Studies show inclusive leadership fuels innovation, engagement and trust. But more than metrics, it makes work feel human.

It’s in the leader who normalises pronoun sharing. The manager who gently challenges a throwaway comment. The executive who carves out space for LGBTQIA+ voices in strategy, not just celebration.

This Pride Month, let’s go beyond visibility. Let’s honour the leaders who create space — not just for us to exist, but to thrive. And let’s challenge ourselves to be those leaders too.

Because when people are free to bring their whole selves to work, they don’t just show up — they shine. And inclusive leadership is the spark that makes that possible.
