From Simulation to Reality……… Building Confidence at Board

Stepping into the Boardroom – Future leaders in action

Stepping into an Executive Director role means stepping into the Boardroom – a place of formal debate, challenge and decision-making. For many aspiring leaders, this environment can feel daunting. Our Board Simulation Programme was designed to change that: offering aspiring and recently appointed Executive Directors the chance to experience the reality of Board life in a safe, developmental setting.

Participant insights have shown just how powerful this experience can be. Participants take on the roles of Executive Directors, preparing and presenting in a realistic Board environment. With simulated Non-Executive Directors providing authentic challenge, the exercise mirrored the dynamics of a true Board meeting.

The results speak for themselves. Evaluation showed an average 22% increase in participants’ confidence to perform at Board, alongside growth in resilience, presence and adaptability. Many reflected on the value of presenting beyond their professional expertise, embracing vulnerability and learning when to listen, when to challenge and how to engage with impact.

As one participant put it: “I have built confidence in my performance in this formal setting, I believe in myself more – I have a better understanding of what to expect at Board .”

The programme goes beyond skill-building – it fosters confidence, authenticity and readiness for Board-level leadership. It strengthens the pipeline of future Executive leaders and equips them to contribute with credibility and courage.

We are proud of the impact this programme continues to deliver. For participants, the Board Simulation is more than a learning exercise – it’s a vital step in bridging the gap between aspiration and reality.  Get in touch to find out more about our Board Simulation and how we could help you and your organisation.
